As more and more devices attach to the Internet, service providers that connect them must maintain an adequate number of IP addresses to handle their customers’ needs. Also, high-speed Internet access is no longer limited to commercial or business users. Residential services via cable modem or DSL now allow an unprecedented number of computers to gain access to the Internet, and each one needs an IP address. In addition, many households use multiple IP addresses. This paper discusses service provider challenges with effectively manage IP space under these conditions.
